Workplace Motivation
Techniques That Work
Every smart business owner or
manager is constantly on the lookout for ways to improve
workplace motivation. Having employees that enjoy what they do
for a living is ideal, but it is up to you to create an
environment that fosters that kind of job satisfaction. With a
little time spent learning what makes your workers tick, you
can have a full staff of satisfied and productive
employees.
There are many great methods for
increasing workplace motivation. The key is finding the
strategies that work best within your own business. Proper
on-the-job training, encouraging and recognizing employee
contributions, and developing exciting incentive programs are
just a few great ideas to get your employees on the ball and
performing at their peak. All these techniques can be adjusted
to fit nearly any workplace, so be creative and find way to
make them work for your own company.
Proper Training
A huge determiner in the level of
workplace motivation is the level of an employee’s training. A
well-educated employee will perform at a much higher level than
one who has little understanding of their job. A worker should
understand their job description, how to complete assigned
tasks, and how proper completion of tasks has an effect on the
company and their coworkers. This can help motivate them to do
their own job well, in order to help others on the
team.
When training a new employee to
take on a position, or when introducing new tasks or concepts
to a current employee, be as concise as possible. Leave nothing
in their job description to the imagination and there can be no
excuses. Role-playing techniques can help them to better
understand what is expected of them and increase workplace
motivation. This also gives the trainer a chance to offer
feedback and suggestions on future performance. Make training
fun by incorporating games and contests within a group training
setting. The results of a well trained employee will be
immediately visible.
Regular
Recognition
Recognition is a major factor in
workplace motivation and morale. Praise employees often for a
job well done, even on the most menial of tasks. Just letting
workers know that their efforts are not ignored can do wonders
for their own sense of purpose within the workplace. An
employee who feels that they are necessary to the daily
operation of a company is sure to be more motivated than one
who feels unappreciated.
Recognition does not have to stop
at task level to increase workplace motivation. Ask for
employee opinions when looking for ideas on new products,
procedures, and policies. They will appreciate the fact that
you value their opinion and you may be surprised at the
innovative ideas that they have come up with. Implement some of
the great ideas your workers have shared with you and watch
them shine with pride.
Incentive Programs
Companies that are not well
versed in workplace motivation are usually under the impression
that a paycheck should be enough incentive to get the job done.
However, incentive and bonus programs can encourage employees
to go above and beyond what is expected of them for just a
little extra compensation. These programs do not have to cost
your company a fortune to be successful. Ask your employees for
suggestions on what would be a good prize or award for a
contest winner and choose a few of the most affordable
ideas.
Incentive programs not only
increase workplace motivation, but also increase the overall
productivity of your business. Set up a goal chart with
challenging, but achievable goals for each employee involved
and reward them with a fun prize once their goal has been
reached. Turn it into a competition to see who meets their goal
fastest to see even better results. Not only will your
employees have fun while working to meet their own goals, your
company’s profits will skyrocket as a result of workplace
motivation.
