Understanding Diet Motivation and How to Keep It

If you have been dieting on and off for years you may have a problem with diet motivation. Trying one diet after another can truly make the most devoted individual find themselves with a lack of diet motivation. Why even bother, right? Many people have no trouble with diet motivation in the beginning. Most of us can march up to the garbage can and throw all of our goodies away. In fact, some of us do rather well dieting for a little while. But boredom soon sweeps in and we are not as excited about that plate of vegetables or that rice cake that is laying on our plate like a piece of wood. This is when our diet motivation can take a drastic nose dive.

So, what does this mean? It probably means that you just have not found the right kind of diet motivation, yet. The simple fact is that you can try to eat right and exercise all you want, but if your attitude isn’t in the right place your diet motivation will not stick around. The first step to proper diet motivation is coming to understand that losing weight takes time. It is not something that will happen over night. You need a plan that will work for you long term. If you do a drastic diet or exercise program you are just setting yourself up to fail from the start.

The next step in gaining the proper diet motivation is to set small attainable goals for yourself. If you have a goal of losing 80 pounds, those two pounds you lost last week aren’t going to even make a large impact on you. However, if you have a small goal such as losing 10 pounds, two pounds is huge! Setting small goals goes far in keeping diet motivation high.

The next thing you should know about keeping your diet motivation in check is to understand that there will be times when you will have setbacks. Many people cannot resist a small slice of cake at a wedding or treats on the holidays. If you slip and over eat one day, do not throw your entire diet into the garbage can. Simply start over the following morning. It’s as simple as that. Many people splurge and never go back on their diets. Knowing that you will have setbacks on occasion can go far in keeping your diet motivation balanced.

One thing that many successful dieters do is find a buddy. This person can be someone inside or outside of your family. It could just be an online friend. It doesn’t matter. Having a buddy is the important thing. This is the person you will go to when you need support or to celebrate a victory. Having a buddy will help you keep your diet motivation. Knowing that someone is out there who genuinely cares can make all the difference.

Lastly, when you are losing weight there will be times when you reach a plateau. Instead of giving up, congratulate yourself for coming this far! All you have to do to jump start your body back into the weight loss mode is to change up your diet and/or exercise routine. Once you get past the plateau and those pounds are creeping off again your diet motivation will increase. Don’t let plateaus get you down!

Remember, you should always reward yourself when you are sticking to your diet. This does not mean that you should go out and buy a gallon of ice cream, either. Reward yourself with something nice like a new article of clothing, cologne, perfume, massage or just a good book. Rewards can keep your diet motivation up.
