Tips for Increasing Work
Motivation
Work motivation is often hard to maintain. It is easy to get
burned out on a project you are not passionate about, or feel
like you are not appreciated. When things are dull or
undesirable at work, you might just want to give up. When major
changes or difficulties are happening at home, work can seem
less important, and thoughts of home may make it difficult to
get through the workday. If motivation is not present, your
productivity can start to slide. The following tips can help
you stay on track when lacking work motivation.
Set Achievable Goals
When you set reasonable, achievable goals and then meet those
goals, you are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and
self-worth. When goals are achieved, you feel great about
yourself and have an increase in work motivation. When you do
not set goals for yourself, you might feel like you are working
towards nothing and achieving nothing. Set monthly, weekly, or
even daily deadlines or work quotas and then feel good about
yourself when you meet those goals.
Get Organized
When you are not organized at work, motivation can disappear
quickly. If you are constantly worried about what you are
supposed to be doing, when that meeting is tomorrow, or where
the stapler is, you will achieve less and less motivation.
Organize your desk, calendar, and tasks to decrease stress and
increase work motivation. Many computer programs can help you
organize your time. Many have automatic reminders and/or alarms
to help you remember due dates and meeting times. When
organizing your workspace, remember that less clutter equals
less stress. When everything is neat and clean, you eliminate
searching for items and stressing over clutter and your time is
used more productively.
Personalize Your Workspace
A dull, drab workspace or a gray corporate cubicle can suck
away your work motivation. Boring surroundings create a bored
employee. Add personal photos of fun times or your loved ones
to perk yourself up when you are having a bad day. Hang your
certificate of recognition to remind you of rewarding times at
work. Add some color to brighten up your surroundings.
Plan For Tomorrow
Work motivation can be easily maintained with a little bit of
planning. Schedule about fifteen minutes at the end of each day
to plan tomorrow. Set goals, plan for meetings, and generally
make sure that you feel prepared to have a successful day at
work. Write down your daily plan and then review it first thing
in the morning. When your day is planned, you will feel less
stressed and more motivated to achieve.
Plan Vacation, and Then Work For It
Everyone needs a break. If you are able to schedule vacation in
advance, do it and then set goals at work to reach before the
vacation time comes. Remind yourself that you earn vacation
time by working, and then use that thought of vacation to
increase work motivation. If you work hard up until your
vacation, instead of slacking off while waiting for that first
vacation day to come, you will have a greater appreciation for
work in general, and an increased sense of work motivation when
you return to work after the vacation is over.
Remember Why You Work
Perhaps the best way to have strong work motivation is to
remind yourself why you work. When you do not think you can do
it anymore, take a moment to think about what things would be
like without your job. Remember why you are where you are and
why you choose to do what you do. Remember how it feels to get
that paycheck every week, and then feel the work motivation
return!
