Dressing for Success in the Office: Things to
Avoid
Just about every business professional realizes that in today's
business setting, dressing for success is paramount for
achieving the most that you can. The question is, though, what
are some of the ways that a newly hired professional can dress
appropriately. While there are countless places that tell you
what to wear, including a show on TLC, very few places are
brave enough to tell you what to avoid when dressing for
success.
The First Dressing Tactic to Avoid: Focusing Too Much on
Your Sexual Assets
While showing off the shape of your body isn't necessarily a
bad thing, when it comes to dressing for success in the office
workplace, keeping it tasteful and professional is a must. For
example, choosing a dress with a plunging V-neckline might show
off what you physically have to offer, it also gives the
impression to others that you have very little to bring to the
table mentally or through experience. Instead, choose something
with a more natural neckline, such as a button down shirt,
where the top button or two is unfastened. That way, you come
across as being both professional and easy to approach, which
is a winning combination.
The Second Dressing Tactic to Avoid: Mismatched
Clothing
Believe it or not, dressing for success does include
maintaining a well put together appearance. While you might not
really care if one of your socks is navy blue while the other
is black, someone during the day will notice it. It could be
the local mailman, or unfortunately it could be your boss.
Mismatched clothing indicates that your attention to detail and
willingness to make an effort is suspect. This quality
certainly doesn't bode well if you want to advance. So in the
morning, turn the light on before you leave the house and give
yourself a quick once over. You'll be glad you did.
The Third Dressing Tactic to Avoid: Wearing the Same Clothes
Repeatedly
Now granted, not everyone has a huge wardrobe available to
them. However, one of the major parts of dressing for success
is the ability to present a fresh perspective on the day's
events. If you decide to wear the same outfit over and over
again, it signals to the professionals around you that either
you are too poor to have more clothes, or you lack originality.
Neither one of those impressions are good ones when you're
climbing the corporate ladder. So instead of choosing outfits
for your wardrobe that are limited to a few one note pieces,
choose outfits that can be easily mixed and matched to produce
new and different outfits.
Dressing for success is an important part of your career
advancement. As the old saying goes, you must dress for the job
you want, not the job you
have.
