How to Create Motivation in the Workplace

Successful businesses have happy employees. Creating motivation in the workplace can be a direct result of a successful business. However, in today’s ever-changing marketplace, employers have to know what to do to bring out its employees’ fullest potential. Many employers miss the simple and effective steps that they can take to bring about productivity, employee satisfaction, and motivation in the workplace. By taking a look at a few of the following ideas, employers can gain a better understanding of what employees are looking for.

Awards and Incentives

It seems unlikely that an employer wouldn’t praise or reward an employee for a job well done but it happens. Pay raises and a bonus are wonderful additions to any paycheck but often times, recognizing an employee who was a defined leader through a tough project speaks volumes. Another way increase motivation in the workplace is to award employees for their years of dedicated service. Some companies will hold banquets or informal company luncheons to honor those that have been an integral part of the company’s success. Likewise, a company that is willing to grow with its employees will do well to offer reimbursement plans for those who want to continue their education or gain a promotion with extra schooling and training.

Listen Up

An employer who makes themselves available to the employees to hear grievances or fresh ideas will surely demonstrate two ways of applied motivation. In the workplace, you will become an employer who values the opinions and employee ideas. Secondly, you will be getting the opportunity to find out what your employees really want from their jobs. By taking this idea and applying it to your every day interactions, your employees will know you as an available employer, concerned about the company, employee morale and success.

Ready, Set Action!

Now that you know what your employees want from the company, you have the opportunity to put into actions. Just hearing your employees isn’t enough. You have to be able to back up what you say the company will do. Not doing so will cause a loss of motivation in the workplace. Also by implementing the employee ideas, you can become a leader in your industry in employee satisfaction. This alone can make your company an attractive company to any job hunter. A company that uses employee ideas to become more successful also creates motivation in the workplace. Employees will continue to generate ideas and be productive contributors to the company’s success.

Respect Is a Two-Way Street

It goes without saying that if you respect your employees, they will in turn respect you. That couldn’t be a more true statement. Too often, employers treat their employees as children, and themselves, the parents. This does nothing to foster motivation in the workplace. This will actually demean and undermine the people that you depend on to help insure that the product or service gets provided in a timely, courteous manner. If you treat your employees as second-class citizens and cannot show them respect for a job well done, you will lose the motivation in the workplace that your company needs. Everyone wants to be valued and respected for the job they perform, from the CEO to the janitor. It is up to the employer to make sure that respect is given.

By now, you are probably thinking about all the other ways to improve productivity and motivate your employees. There are still many other ways to properly inspire your workforce. There are conferences and workshops specifically designed to teach employers how to motivate employees. No matter how it is done or achieved; if it is approached with the right attitudes and ideas, motivation in the workplace can be easily gained and felt by everyone involved.
